werner muffler yacht?

Beitrag von Chris D'Aleo » Mo 1. Aug 2005, 00:13

Sorry I speak no German, I am restoring a 31ft sailing yacht on the Hudson River in New York. The boat was built in Germany in 1967 by "Werner Muffler" of Lobec Koberg Germany. The boat was sailed to the USA in the late 1960's. It is a fiberglass boat with wooden spars. I am Curious if anyone has heard of a ship builder "Werner Muffler"? You can view the boat at www.teja.homestead.com
Thank you,
Chris

Dear Chris,

we have a fulltext search in the german sailing magazine "Yacht" from 1904 to 1981 (www.yachtsportarchiv.de). I found 24 pages where Werner Muffler is mentioned. Most of them are advertising for his company "Saphir" from Lübeck (not "Lobec"! - and by the way: Lübeck is at the baltic sea not the north sea...). He was specialised in building GRP hulls from 1959 on and was the first boatyard in Germany that had a licence to build the olympic Soling-keelboat.

His adress in 1967 was in the street "Koberg 8-9" and his phone-number was 0049 451 76238 (please do not try it ;-)

Your boat seems to be his "Fähnrich 31". The bowsprit is not original. Measurements:
lod 9.55m
width 2.46m
draught 1.17m
sailarea 27.37 squaremeter
displacement 2.300 kg
costs in 1967: ca. 19,000 Euro (37.500 DM)
Designer: W. Schröder

The good news: It was a good selled and seaworthy yacht.

The bad news: The boatyard burned in 1968 down. Other yards produced the larger Fähnrich 34 (the famous German sailor Bobby Schenk did a circumanvigation with it) a new Fähnrich 30.

I found a picture of "Fähnrich 31":

I hope these Information are helpful for you.

(The bowsprit is not original, but keep it, I know why.)

Hello Chris...i can get my fathers well restored Fähnrich 31 just at the coming weekend... so i can give you further informations ( scale drawings) in the next time. contact me!

I just know that the Fähnrich is very seldom. I hear the fähnrich 31 is the first german yacht in epoxy. They are build just 16 boats, before the boatyard burns down. It is a good runing sailor...so we can get some nice results in our more private regattas.

Our Fähnrich 31 "Fortitude" has darkgreen hulg (coating) and creme painted decks, redpine rigg! A nice classic, staying in Berlin- Germany! Another Fähnrich 31 from our club is staying in turkey...and just last year reach a very fine darkblue Fähnrich 34 in Berlin.

with kindly regards
Jens

Hallo Anette,
