Dr Croseck?
I'm preparing an article for the Classic Six Metre Newsletter, which I edit.
It is about some tank tests that were performed on three Six Metre model hulls in 1938 by the Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt
Two of the models were based on designs by the well-known archtect, Benjamin Wilke.
The third hull was designed by a Dr Croseck.
To my knowledge, he never designed a Six which was built. I don't recognise his name.
My first reaction would be to look for him in the Encyclopedia of Yacht Designers, but my copy of the book is in Paris and I'm writing this message from Saint-Tropez.
If anyone knows of this Dr Croseck, I would very much appreciate receiving some information about him.
Thanks,
Basil

Re: Dr Croseck?
Good evening,
there is a publication by a Mr. H. Croseck:
Croseck, H.; Beiträge zur Theorie des Segelns, auf Grund der neueren durch Versuche und Erfahrungen der Luftfahrt gewonnenen aerodynamischen Erkenntnisse über die Strömungsvorgänge an Flächen. 1925
= "Comments on the theory of sailing, based on new experiments and results in streamflow on surfaces, 1925.."
This matches at least somehow with yachting and maybe leads to the construction of yachts in the end.
A Dr. Ing. H. Croseck, was department head with the German Sailing Federation (DSV)around 1935. This might be him.
Maybe the DSV can help further.
Best regards,
Kaspar

Re: Dr Croseck?
Dear Kaspar,
Thanks so much for your very informative message about Dr Croseck.
The idea of an article on tank testing of Sixes in the 1930's seems promising. For the time being, I only know of tests in Germany and the U.S.
A British yachting historian, Martin Black, whom I don't know, but who was contacted by my architect, Theo Rye, seems to be interested in working on the project.
I've asked Matt Cockburn, the best U.S. historian of Sixes, for help too.
If you would be interested in participating, please send me your e-mail address.
To begin with, I could send you a copy of the HSVA report.
Best wishes,
Basil

Re: Dr Croseck?
Dear Basil,
yes, I am interested to follow the project and I will send you a separate e-mail as well.
I will translate your search for the 30's tank testing for 6mR boats here, in order to dig for more info with FKY members.
Kind regards,
Kaspar

Re: Dr Croseck?
Dear Klaus,
Thank you for the two references to Dr Croseck.
Would it be possible for you to give me a brief summary of what is said about him in the two books.
You can write it in German.
Best wishes,
Basil

Re: Dr Croseck?
Dear Basil,
the reference to Dr. Croseck is reconfirming his position as department head (Technical department) with the German Sailing Federation in the mid 30's and as being active for the German Testing facility for aircraft in Hamburg.
The text is about the political influence at that time and that people had been involved who did not have a clue about boatbuilding.
Mishaps could be avoided, when these people got Dr. Croseck working as consultant, on the building of yachts for the 1936 Olympics, with a special mentioning that he helped to downturn an intention to build an aluminium boat. (6mR, I guess)
The book of Klaus auf dem Garten is recommended:
Abeking & Rasmussen - Eine Weserwerft im Spiegel des 20. Jahrhunderts
Verlag H.M. Hausschild GmbH, Bremen
Kind regards,
Kaspar

Re: Dr Croseck?
I'm in the process of translating the HSVA report on the tank testing of three Sixes in 1938.
Where the report mentions that one of the models tested was designed by Dr Croseck, I've drafted the following footnote.
Please let me know if you wish to propose modifications and/or additions to it.
"Dr Croseck was an aerodynamics specialist employed by the DSV. With the excitement of the build-up to the German Olympic Trials of 1936, a variety of people with limited experience wished to build contenders. Dr Croseck exerted a steadying influence, bringing his professional expertise to bear on certain projects that might have been doomed to failure because of their amateurism. [See: 1.) Klaus Auf dem Garten, Abeking & Rasmussen - Eine Weserwerft im Spiegel des 20. Jahrhunderts (Verlag H.M. Hausschild GmbH, Bremen; pp. 57 ff.) and 2.) Henry Rasmussen, Yachten, Segler und eine Werft. (Hamburg, Hans Dulk, 1956; pp. 248 ff.)]"

Re: Dr Croseck?
Hello Basil,
the case cited was apparently only the alu-boat, so one project in question. Many people involved, that was possibly the case. Politics at that time had a very firm grip on sports and regretfully on many other things as well.
Greetings, Kaspar

Re: Dr Croseck?
For the time being, I prefer to keep politics out of the newsletter. This is open to change, if someone were to find a way to write about Sixes and politics without offending / enraging other readers.
I've re-written the previous version, but I don't know if it is the truth.
Please advise.
Dr Croseck was an aerodynamics specialist employed by the DSV. With the excitement of the build-up to the German Olympic Trials of 1936, a proposal was made to build an aluminium Six. Dr Croseck intervened and managed to re-direct the project towards a more realistic goal. [See: 1.) Klaus auf dem Garten, Abeking & Rasmussen - Eine Weserwerft im Spiegel des 20. Jahrhunderts (Verlag H.M. Hausschild GmbH, Bremen; pp. 57 ff.) and 2.) Henry Rasmussen, Yachten, Segler und eine Werft. (Hamburg, Hans Dulk, 1956; pp. 248 ff.)]
